Keith Downie said he’s been told the player who turned down a move to Newcastle is Boubakary Soumare of Lille.[ad_pod ]Steve Bruce confirmed in his press conference on Friday that the Toon had made a near-record offer for his “number one target” during this transfer window, but that it was knocked back as the player wanted to stay with his current club.
Now, Downie has confirmed via his sources that the player is Soumare. The 20-year-old midfielder has reportedly been the subject of interest from Chelsea and Manchester United after he has made 15 starts in Ligue 1 for Les Dogues.

The total £45m capture would have been the biggest signing in the club’s history after the arrival of 23-year-old Joelinton in the summer. The failure to capture Soumare means that Newcastle are left with just three signings so far this window, with Nabil Bentaleb, Danny Rose and Valentin Lazaro joining on loan.
However, it is certainly a positive that they could revisit a deal for the young Frenchman in the summer.
