Gimenez equals historic mark with games to spareMexican hits 31 goals in calendar yearBig clubs eye up 22-year-old phenomGettyWHAT HAPPENED?
The 22-year-old's injury-time strike against Volendam on Thursday was his 31st goal of the calendar year. That was enough to break a record set by Suarez who hit 30 goals for Ajax in 2009. The Mexican international tops the Eredivisie scoring charts with 18 goals in 15 appearances with the league season still weeks from the halfway mark. He remains some way off the all-time record tally, with Cor van der Gijp managing 37 strikes in 1960.

The Argentinian-born forward has been sensational since arriving in Rotterdam last summer with his goals playing a crucial role in firing Feyenoord to a dominant title win. Unsurprisingly, that form has alerted a host of top clubs across Europe with Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona as well as free-spending Chelsea all interested.

It's proving to be quite the year in the Netherlands. While Gimenez's individual exploits have seen him hit new marks, Feyenoord find themselves 10 points behind PSV Eindhoven whose astonishing start to the season has seen them win all 15 Eredivisie scoring a barely-believable 52 goals while conceding just six.
WHAT NEXT FOR SANTIAGO GIMENEZ?
Gimenez will have just one more league game to extend his historic mark with the Dutch football calendar switching to cup action next weekend. In the meantime he'll head to Glasgow where Feyenoord take on Celtic in a Champions League dead rubber on Wednesday.
